Great spot for a boat...right? This boat landed on Metro-North train tracks by the Ossining Station in New York during hurricane Sandy (Frankenstorm). It seems as though Halloween has become a day for disastrous storms. Last year in New York we had a really bad snow storm. I strongly believe..or should I say..know for a fact, that many people underestimated this storm and many people lost their lives because they chose not to evacuate when told to do so.
Even though power has been restored to quite a few locations, millions are still without power (and heat) 9 days after the storm and temperatures are continually dropping. We're supposed to be getting a Noreaster this week too.
In places such as Breezy Point and the Rockaways, over hundreds of people lost their homes to fires. Many homes in New Jersey were completely washed away, as well as the boardwalks in Atlantic City. My heart just pours out to these people who lost everything and those who are suffering from Sandy.
My family was fortunate enough to be spared during this storm, but many people I know were not so fortunate. The neighborhood where I grew up in Long Island was hit pretty hard. My high school (Lawrence High School) just got power restored today, but the school remains closed. They are taking donations for people who lost everything, so if you'd like to donate please go to lawrenceta.org (the teachers union) to help them get food and clothing to the community. Every little bit counts. I see posts on facebook seeing that people need diapers, baby wipes, food, blankets, etc.
Numerous gas stations still look baron like this one on the left. Others are letting people (and not cars) in to get gas. Gas stations are being supplied with gas now, but the lines are crazy. Here are some pictures below of Sandy's wrath. The picture on the bottom right is of a subway station in the city where the platform is completely submerged in water.
and the WINNER is...
2012 Presidential Winner -- Barack Obama
