OCM...The Oil Cleansing Method
What's this craze with oil all of a sudden? Oil to wash your face, oil pulling for your mouth, oil for sealing moisture in your hair and detoxing your scalp. Maybe I'm just late with all of this. LOL! Apparently oil is a good thing and has many, many benefits!
Okay, so tonight I was doing some browsing on YouTube for videos on how to get clear skin when I came across a few videos on the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM). The people who made these videos claim to have had really good results and some even had before pictures. OCM is based on a very basic scientific principle ..like dissolves like. In this case, the oils used in OCM are very similar (like) the natural oils produced and will dissolve or break down such "like" substances.
So the cleansing oil in this method is Castor oil. Castor oil also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial capabilities. It can be very drying as well, so it's best to mix it with a carrier oil. The ratios of castor oil to carrier oil depend on your skin type: the drier your skin tends to be the less castor oil you need and on the flip side, the more oily your skin, the more oil you need to dissolve it (like dissolves like).
Oily Skin (use more castor oil): 25-30% Castor Oil to 70-75% Carrier Oil* (ex. Sunflower, Sweet Almond Oil)
Normal Skin: 20% Castor Oil to 80% Carrier Oil* [ex. Grapeseed, Jojoba Oil (actually a wax ester)]
Dry Skin (use less castor oil): 10% Castor Oil to 90% Carrier Oil* (ex. Apricot Kernel, Avocado Oil)
*Carrier oil should be chosen based on your skin type
The method is very simple and goes as follows:
Step 1: Rub the oil combination between your hands to gently warm it, then liberally apply it to your face and massage your face in circular upward motions with firm strokes
Step 2: Place a really, really warm (borderline hot, don't scorch your face!) washcloth (I like to use a microfiber cloth) over your face. The purpose of this is to open up your pores and loosen up the dirt
Step 3: Wipe the oil from your face in an upward motion.
Step 4: Repeat Step #2 & Step #3 for a total of 3 times. You really want to make sure to get most of the oil off of your face so that you won't break out from it.
Step 5 (optional): If your skin is experiencing dryness afterwards, then follow up with a light moisturizer or use a dab of the oil mix and rub it into your skin until it is fully absorbed.
My Results: This was my first time trying it and I must say that I am impressed. My skin feels very light and extra soft. The inflammation went down on one of my pimples, too. I had to use a little bit of the oil mix afterwards because I had dry patches. I will admit though that I had already washed my face for the night before I found out about the OCM, so my results my not be as accurate. But I will be using this method for a while to at least try it out and if I like it I will continue with it.
Have you ever tried the OCM? What were your experiences with it?
